Despite Gen Z’s strong environmental consciousness, a recent LinkedIn survey reveals a critical shortage of “green skills” necessary to combat the climate crisis. The survey, which included over 7,000 global workers from regions such as the U.K., U.S., and Brazil, found that only one in 20 Gen Zers possesses the skills needed for green jobs. Additionally, just one in eight workers across the broader workforce have the expertise required to advance the climate agenda.

This skills gap poses significant risks for businesses striving to meet their sustainability targets. Among Fortune 500 companies, 47% have set ambitious 2030 emissions reduction goals. However, LinkedIn warns that by then, only one in 10 Gen Z workers will have the necessary green skills, which is problematic as this generation will constitute a third of the workforce by that date.

“Green skills” encompass a wide range of abilities essential for addressing environmental challenges. These include technical skills relevant to renewable industries, such as water system preservation and heat pump installation, as well as broader skills like climate action planning, corporate sustainability, sustainable procurement, sustainability reporting, and impact assessment. Roles such as sustainability officers, green buildings designers, and product lifecycle analysts exemplify positions requiring these skills.

Gen Z’s lack of green skills is not due to a lack of interest. In fact, nearly two-thirds of Gen Zers would consider declining a job offer if they were dissatisfied with the employer’s green policies, compared to half of the overall workforce. Events like COP28 have further motivated 58% of Gen Zers to seek green jobs.

The LinkedIn report identifies major barriers for Gen Z in accessing green jobs, including a lack of available opportunities, insufficient experience, and inadequate green skills. To address this, the report recommends businesses identify essential skills for climate goals and hire based on these criteria, rather than solely on job titles or academic qualifications. Implementing targeted training programs to develop young workers is also crucial.
