India’s transport sector, responsible for 13-15% of the country’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, faces a significant challenge in achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The anticipated rise in private vehicle ownership and urbanization could double the sector’s energy consumption and emissions if no action is taken. Switching to electric vehicles (EVs) is a critical step in reducing CO2 emissions. While EVs eliminate tailpipe emissions, the carbon intensity of India’s coal-dependent power sector remains a concern. By 2030, India’s EV fleet could prevent around 5 million tons of CO2 emissions, potentially rising to 110-380 million tons by 2050 with broader EV adoption and a cleaner power grid. Despite the benefits, high initial costs hinder widespread EV adoption, necessitating incentives like tax rebates and subsidies.
Developing a comprehensive EV charging network and integrating renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, into the grid are essential. Investments in smart grid technologies will manage the increased demand for EV charging. Stricter emission regulations for internal combustion engines, mandatory emissions testing, and penalties for non-compliance can promote low-emission vehicle production. Encouraging the use of biofuels, compressed natural gas, and hydrogen fuel cells for public and commercial transport can further reduce emissions.
Investing in modern public transport systems, like Bus Rapid Transit Systems and expanded metro and suburban rail networks, can decrease reliance on private vehicles. Electrifying railway networks and shifting freight transport from roads to rail can also significantly lower emissions. Developing bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, and transport-oriented development strategies can promote cycling and walking, reducing the need for motorized transport. Implementing congestion pricing and strict parking policies can encourage the use of public transport.
Ultimately, achieving carbon neutrality in the transport sector requires behavioral changes. Public awareness campaigns are crucial in fostering sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation practices.
